Who is Hotel Xcaret Mexico best for? After visiting with our 13-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter, I realized that the answer isn’t as simple as families with kids or even families who love adventure.
Hotel Xcaret Mexico offers a very different kind of all-inclusive vacation, and the right family can get an incredible amount out of staying there. Our kids happened to be at what felt like the perfect ages, but age was only part of why the resort worked so well for us.

Younger children can still have a wonderful time, but families planning a once-in-a-lifetime visit may want to wait until their children are older and more willing to try adventurous activities. Hotel Xcaret Mexico may not be the best fit for travelers with mobility limitations or anyone looking for a vacation centered around a large, traditional sandy beach.
Who Is Hotel Xcaret Mexico Best For?
Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a great fit for families who don’t want to sit in four pool chairs for an entire vacation. We love relaxing by the water, but eventually someone in our family is ready to get up and do something.
That is what worked so well for us at Xcaret. One part of the day could involve swimming, eating and enjoying the resort. The next could have us inside a cave, flying over the jungle on a zip line or jumping into a cenote. We could relax without having a vacation that was only about relaxing. For us, that is pretty much the ideal combination.
Every family has a different idea of fun. We always think about what everyone will actually enjoy when choosing an all-inclusive resort, and Hotel Xcaret Mexico is definitely not a one-size-fits-all vacation.

Tweens and Teens May Be the Sweet Spot
Our son was 13 and our daughter was 15 during our trip, and my husband and I kept saying that they were at such good ages for Hotel Xcaret Mexico.
They were old enough and big enough to do almost everything that interested us. We did not have to keep separating because one child was too young for an activity or because someone needed to stay behind. We could zip line, rappel, kayak, ride ATVs and jump into cenotes together.
At the same time, they were still excited to have these experiences with us. There is no single perfect age for Hotel Xcaret Mexico, but the tween and teen years can be a great window. Kids are able to take on many of the bigger adventures, and doing those things together can still be one of the best parts of the trip.
Some of my favorite pictures of the kids came from these adventures too. The Xcaret photo package was especially worth having when they were zip lining, jumping into cenotes or doing something I obviously couldn’t stand there and photograph myself.
Age Is Only Part of the Picture
A teenager is not automatically going to love Hotel Xcaret Mexico just because they are old enough to do the activities. An adventurous 11-year-old may get much more out of the trip than a 16-year-old who hates heights, caves, water or being outside all day.
Both of our kids were willing to try the activities that interested us, which made the trip much easier. Nobody had to be talked into zip lining or jumping into a cenote once we arrived.
You know your kids. If they hear about underground rivers, ATVs and caves and immediately want to know when you are leaving, Xcaret may be a great fit. If that list produces nothing but complaints, their age probably will not matter.
Being Physically Active Matters More Than You May Expect
My husband and I said several times during the trip how thankful we were that all four of us were physically capable of doing so much. Even on days when we stayed at the resort, we walked a lot.
Hotel Xcaret Mexico is large and spread out, with plenty of stairs between the rooms, pools, restaurants and different areas of the property. Getting around the resort itself can be tiring before adding any parks or excursions.
We also climbed, swam through rivers and caves, kayaked, zip lined, rappelled, rode ATVs and repeatedly got in and out of the water. None of those activities felt impossible on its own, but they added up over the course of the trip.
You certainly do not need to be an athlete to enjoy Xcaret, and no one has to participate in every activity. Still, families who are comfortable walking and being active will have more options and an easier time taking advantage of everything that makes the resort different.

🌴 What We Brought for Our Xcaret Adventures
Hotel Xcaret Mexico involves plenty of water, whether you are swimming through rivers, visiting cenotes or spending the day at Xplor. These are a few things we were glad to have with us.
- My Water Shoes: Water shoes were required for many of the activities, so this is one item I would not leave at home. Mine stayed comfortable throughout the trip and held up well. I bought my husband a cheaper pair, but his were not nearly as comfortable and started falling apart.
- Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen: Xcaret asks guests to use sunscreen that is safe for its rivers, cenotes and other natural environments. We brought Blue Lizard mineral sunscreen so we could protect our skin while following the requirements for the activities.
- Waterproof Phone Pouch – So many Xcaret experiences involve water that a waterproof phone pouch is one of the easiest ways to keep your phone protected and still have it available for photos.
- Dry Backpack – This helped keep dry clothes and other belongings protected when most of what we were doing involved rivers, pools or cenotes.
- Wet Bag – I started bringing a few wet bags on this trip and really liked having them. They made it easy to separate wet swimsuits and water gear from everything else in our bag.
- Portable Charger: We used our phones constantly for photos, videos and the resort app. I have owned several portable chargers, and this one is hands down my favorite.
We learned pretty quickly that packing for Xcaret is different from packing for a typical beach vacation, so I put together an Xcaret packing list with what we actually used during our stay.
The Resort Is Amazing, but the Included Adventures Make It Special
We could have spent our entire vacation at Hotel Xcaret Mexico without leaving the property and still had an amazing time. The resort has pools, rivers, beaches, kayaking, rafting, waterslides, restaurants and so many different areas to explore. We never felt as though the hotel was simply a place to sleep between park days.
In fact, we sometimes had a hard time leaving because there was still so much we wanted to do at the resort. We even changed some of our plans so we could spend more time there.
The included parks and excursions are what made the trip feel completely different from other all-inclusive vacations we have taken. Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenotes and Xcaret Park gave us experiences we could not have had by staying at the resort alone.
Families do not need to leave the property every day or try to fit in everything. However, taking advantage of at least some of the parks and experiences included with your stay is what makes Hotel Xcaret Mexico feel so unique and special.

Xcaret Is Not Only for Thrill Seekers
A family does not have to spend the entire trip zip lining and jumping into cenotes to enjoy Hotel Xcaret Mexico. There are plenty of other ways to take advantage of what is available, including taking the ferry to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres, going on a catamaran, sailing and exploring more of the Riviera Maya.
That variety is part of what makes the resort work for different kinds of families. One person may be most excited about Xplor, while someone else would rather spend a day on the water or enjoy the food, pools and rivers at the resort.
We ran out of days long before we ran out of things we wanted to do. Families can choose the experiences that sound best to them without turning the vacation into a race to complete everything.
We also loved the food. During our stay, we ate several meals in a cave, watched a Mexican dinner show, dressed up for a few nicer dinners and grabbed easier meals at the buffets and pool restaurants. We never felt like we were eating the same type of meal over and over.
Xcaret Offers Space for Everyone in the Family
Hotel Xcaret Mexico gave us plenty of opportunities to spend time together, but we did not need to stay together every minute. Our teens could visit the teen club, arcade, obstacle course and teen dance club while my husband and I relaxed by the pool.
The resort also has areas and activities for younger children, along with fun food and treat options that are clearly designed with them in mind. Adults have their own spaces and dining experiences as well.
That makes Xcaret a good fit for families who want a shared vacation without expecting everyone to do the same thing all day. Parents can enjoy some adult time, teens can have independence and younger children have spaces created for them. Everyone can come back together for the experiences they want to share.
Travelers With Mobility Limitations May Find Xcaret Difficult
I noticed fewer older guests at Hotel Xcaret Mexico than I typically see at other all-inclusive resorts. I do not think age itself is the issue, but mobility, balance and stamina can have a major effect on the experience.
The resort is large, spread out and filled with stairs. I expected to find more elevators and escalators, but they were not always available or convenient for where we wanted to go. Even getting from your room to the pools, restaurants and activities can involve a significant amount of walking.
There are also suspension bridges throughout the resort. Some guests may feel uneasy walking across them, particularly anyone with balance concerns or a fear of heights. It may be possible to avoid some of the bridges, but doing so would make getting around much less convenient, especially when walking to the beach.
Many of the included experiences also involve swimming, climbing, uneven surfaces or getting in and out of boats and water. Travelers with mobility limitations will still have a beautiful resort to enjoy, but they may find Hotel Xcaret Mexico difficult to navigate.
This is one of those things that is difficult to understand from resort photos but could make a major difference in someone’s vacation.
Families With Younger Children Can Still Have an Amazing Time at Xcaret
I would not say that families need to wait until their children are tweens or teens to visit Hotel Xcaret Mexico. We saw play areas, activities and plenty of fun treats created specifically for younger kids, and there was plenty for families to enjoy without attempting the biggest adventures.
However, the trip will probably look different with small children. Some activities have age, height or ability requirements, and younger kids may tire more quickly from walking around the resort and parks. Parents may also need to split up when an older child or adult wants to try something the youngest family member cannot do.
If Hotel Xcaret Mexico is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for your family, I would probably wait until your children are a little older, braver and more willing to try adventurous activities. Younger children can absolutely have a wonderful vacation there, but waiting may allow your entire family to experience much more of what makes Xcaret special.
Xcaret Is Not a Traditional Beach Resort
Our family vacations usually revolve around the beach, but that was not the case at Hotel Xcaret Mexico. We went into the ocean most days, although we usually stayed for only about an hour because there was so much else we wanted to do.
The water was clear, beautiful and warm during our visit.
However, there is not a large sandy beach with long rows of chairs sitting directly on the sand. There are quite a few rocks, and the water was a little rough on some days. The chairs are set back rather than lined up along the shoreline.
We still enjoyed the ocean, but the beach was not the center of our vacation the way it usually is in the Caribbean. Families who like spending some time in the ocean before moving on to pools, rivers and activities may be perfectly happy here. Anyone picturing a sprawling sandy beach where they will spend the entire day should know that Xcaret offers a different kind of experience.
Who May Not Enjoy Hotel Xcaret Mexico?
Hotel Xcaret Mexico may feel overwhelming to travelers who want a simple vacation at a small resort. There are multiple pools, rivers, restaurants, parks, tours and activities to choose from, and it can take time just to understand what is available.
It may also be a poor fit for families who dislike planning or feel stressed when they cannot do everything. We quickly realized that fitting it all in was impossible. Once we accepted that, we chose what interested us most and changed plans when we wanted more time at the resort.
Families looking for a quiet, predictable vacation may be happier somewhere else. Xcaret is best for people who enjoy having a lot of choices and are comfortable leaving plenty of them for another trip.
