If you are wondering what is included in an all inclusive beach resort, you are definitely not the only one. It sounds simple, but if you have never booked one before, it can be surprisingly hard to tell what all inclusive really means. Is everything covered? Are drinks included? What about activities, tips, or excursions?

Our family loves beach all inclusive vacations because they are just so easy. With kids, there is something really nice about showing up, settling in, and knowing that most of the food, drinks, and fun are already included in the trip. We still sometimes leave the resort for a meal or to explore a little, but overall we love the convenience, the activities, and the fact that most of the cost is handled ahead of time.

In this post, I am breaking down what is included in an all inclusive beach resort, what usually costs extra, and why this kind of vacation works so well for so many families.

What Is Included in an All Inclusive Beach Resort?

What is included in an all inclusive beach resort? Most beach all inclusive resorts include your room, meals, snacks, drinks, beach and pool access, entertainment, and a variety of on-site activities. While this covers most of your vacation, some things like excursions, spa treatments, and premium experiences usually cost extra.

  • Beach and pool access
  • Non-motorized water sports
  • Entertainment and activities

This is pretty much the vibe — grab a drink, find a chair, and everything else just falls into place.

What Is Included in an All Inclusive Beach Resort: A Detailed Breakdown

While every resort is a little different, most beach all inclusive resorts follow a similar structure. The goal is that you can settle in and not have to think too much about planning meals, activities, or daily logistics.

food and dining options at an all inclusive beach resort
There’s always something — whether you want a full meal or just a quick snack between the pool and the beach.

Accommodations Included at an All Inclusive Beach Resort

Your room or suite is included for the length of your stay, along with daily housekeeping. Some resorts also include a stocked mini fridge that is refilled regularly.

Food and Dining Included at an All Inclusive Beach Resort

Most resorts include a mix of buffet restaurants and sit down dining options. You can usually eat as much as you want without worrying about the cost of each meal. Some resorts require reservations for certain restaurants, while others are more flexible.

Snacks and Quick Bites

In addition to meals, there are usually snack bars or casual spots open throughout the day. This is something our kids especially love because they can grab something whenever they are hungry without it turning into a whole production.

Drinks Included at an All Inclusive Beach Resort

Soft drinks, coffee, and alcoholic beverages are typically included. This usually means unlimited access to cocktails, beer, wine, and basic mixed drinks, although higher end or premium options may not always be included. Many resorts also include drinks in your room, like a stocked mini fridge with soda, water, or beer, and sometimes even bottles of wine or liquor depending on the resort.

Not something you see everywhere, but yes, this was actually in the room.

Beach and Pool Access

This is a big one. Chairs, umbrellas, and access to pools and the beach are all included, which makes it easy to spend the day relaxing without any extra planning.

Activities Included at an All Inclusive Beach Resort

Some resorts go all out with activities for kids, which can make a big difference depending on your family.

Most resorts offer a variety of included activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, beach games, and fitness classes. We usually take advantage of the non motorized water sports like kayaking or paddleboarding since those are included and easy to jump into.

We almost always end up doing this — it’s included, easy, and just makes the day more fun.

Many resorts also offer nightly entertainment, which can be a fun way to end the day.

Nightly shows and entertainment are something we don’t always plan for, but they’re usually a fun surprise.

What Is NOT Included in an All Inclusive Beach Resort? (What Costs Extra)

What is not included in an all inclusive beach resort? While most essentials are covered, things like excursions, spa treatments, motorized water sports, premium dining experiences, airport transfers, and tips are often not included and may cost extra.

  • Excursions and off-property tours
  • Spa treatments and services
  • Motorized water sports (jet skis, boat tours)
  • Premium dining or upgraded experiences
  • Airport transfers (at some resorts)
  • Tips and gratuities (varies by resort)

If you want a better idea of the extra costs families still run into, I break down the biggest surprises in what families usually still pay extra for.

Excursions and Off-Property Activities

Things like guided tours, adventure activities, or day trips are usually booked separately.

Experiences like this are usually extra — but they can be some of the most memorable parts of the trip.

For example, if you are visiting Jamaica, popular excursions like Dunn’s River Falls or the Blue Hole are typically booked separately. If you are deciding between those two, I break it down in this comparison of Dunn’s River Falls vs. the Blue Hole.

You can also browse popular tours and excursions here.

Spa Treatments

Massages, facials, and other spa services are almost always an additional cost.

Motorized Water Sports

While non motorized activities like kayaking and paddleboarding are usually included, things like jet skis or boat tours typically cost extra.

Things like boat rides or jet skis are usually not included, so this is one area where you may spend a little extra.

Premium Dining and Drinks Not Included at Some Resorts

Some resorts offer upgraded dining experiences or higher end alcohol that is not part of the standard all inclusive package.

This kind of setup looks amazing, but it’s usually one of those “extra” experiences.

Airport Transfers

Some resorts include transfers, but many do not, so this is something to check before booking. If the one that you choose does not, you can book them in advance here.

Tips and Gratuities

This depends on the resort. Some include tips, while others expect them. For us, this is usually one of the main extra costs we plan for ahead of time.

💡 What Surprises People Most

One of the biggest misconceptions is that all inclusive means absolutely everything is covered. In reality, it usually covers everything you need for a relaxing beach vacation, but not necessarily every possible experience.

Frequently Asked Questions About All Inclusive Beach Resorts

Do all inclusive resorts include everything?

Not always. Most beach all inclusive resorts include your room, meals, drinks, and many activities, but things like excursions, spa treatments, and certain premium experiences usually cost extra.

Are drinks included at all inclusive resorts?

Yes, drinks are typically included. This usually means unlimited soft drinks, coffee, and alcoholic beverages like cocktails, beer, and wine. Many resorts also stock your room with drinks like water, soda, or beer, and sometimes even wine or liquor depending on the property.

Are excursions included at all inclusive resorts?

Most of the time, no. Excursions like guided tours or off-property adventures are usually an additional cost. One exception is certain resorts like Hotel Xcaret Mexico, which include many off-site experiences, but that is not typical.

Do you still need money at an all inclusive resort?

Yes, a little. Even though most things are included, you may still want money for tips, excursions, spa treatments, or any off-property meals or activities.

If you want a full breakdown of where those extra costs usually come from, take a look at what’s not included at all-inclusive resorts.

Are all inclusive resorts worth it for families?

For many families, yes. The convenience, included food and activities, and ability to plan most of the cost ahead of time can make these trips much easier and more relaxing, especially with kids.

Why Families Love Beach All Inclusive Resorts

For our family, beach all inclusive vacations are one of the easiest ways to travel. We loved them even before we had kids, and we still love them now as a family. There is something really nice about arriving, settling in, and not having to think through every meal, activity, or plan for the day.

One of the biggest reasons we keep coming back to this type of trip is the convenience. The kids can grab food or drinks whenever they want, there are always options everyone will eat, and we are not constantly pulling out a wallet or deciding where to go next. It just makes the whole trip feel more relaxed, and even without kids, that same ease is a big part of the appeal.

This is the part we always come back to — being able to just relax, and enjoy it without thinking about anything else.

I also love that most of the cost is handled ahead of time. That does not mean everything is included, but it does make the trip feel more predictable. We usually plan for a few extras like tips or maybe an excursion, but overall it takes a lot of the stress out of budgeting during the trip.

There is also a built in mix of activity and downtime. We can spend time at the pool or beach, try things like kayaking or paddleboarding, and still have plenty of time to relax. While we have not used kids clubs often, we have used them a few times, and they can be a nice option depending on the resort and your kids.

If you are considering this type of trip, I go into more detail in why we love all-inclusive resorts for family beach trips, where I share more of our personal experience.

If you are trying to decide which resort is the best fit, this is where the details really matter. I go into that more in how to choose the right Caribbean all-inclusive for your family..

A Few Things We Always Bring to the Beach at All-Inclusive Resorts

One of the reasons we love beach all-inclusive resorts is that we don’t have to carry much to the beach. Chairs, towels, food, and drinks are already there, which is exactly why these trips feel so easy.

There are really only a few small things we bring with us:

  • Waterproof Phone Pouch – A non-negotiable for us. It lets us keep our phones nearby, take photos in the water, and not worry about sand or splashes.
  • Cheap Inflatable Intertubes – We pack a couple and ask the resort to blow them up for us. The kids loved floating in the ocean, and at the end of the trip we either deflated them or passed them along to another child on the beach.
  • Waterproof Mini Beach Football – This is usually my son’s contribution. It’s easy to toss in a bag and gives the kids something fun to do in the water without us having to bring much at all.

Other than that, we keep it simple — a small beach bag, a hat, sunscreen, and of course a good book. We keep our packing just as simple for the rest of the trip too — here’s exactly what we bring (and what we skip) in our Caribbean all-inclusive packing list for kids..

Not Every All Inclusive Resort Is the Same

One thing that is really important to know is that not every all inclusive beach resort includes the same things. While most follow a similar structure with food, drinks, and on site activities included, the details can vary quite a bit from one resort to another.

For example, most resorts include non motorized water sports like kayaking or paddleboarding, but anything more adventurous or off property usually costs extra. That is why it is always worth looking closely at what is actually included before you book.

There are also some resorts that go well beyond the typical all inclusive model. A good example is Hotel Xcaret Mexico, where experiences like zip lining, white water rafting, and visiting cenotes are included as part of your stay. That is definitely not the norm, which is why it stands out so much. We are actually headed there this summer and plan to share a full review after our trip.

This is also where reading real reviews can help. If you want an example of what a more typical all inclusive experience looks like for a family, you can read our honest review of Dreams Dominicus La Romana with kids..

At the end of the day, most beach all inclusive resorts include everything you need for a relaxing trip, but the extras and overall experience can vary more than people expect.

Why Someone Might Choose Not to Do an All Inclusive

Even though we really love beach all inclusive vacations, they are not the right fit for every trip or every traveler.

One of the biggest reasons someone might skip an all inclusive is if they want to explore more of the destination. In places like Aruba, for example, there are some all inclusive resorts, but not nearly as many as other Caribbean destinations. A lot of people go there specifically to try local restaurants, explore different beaches, and get out and see the island.

Food can also be a big factor. While all inclusive resorts offer plenty of options, some travelers prefer experiencing local restaurants and authentic cuisine throughout their trip rather than eating mostly on resort.

There is also the value side to consider. If you plan to spend a lot of time off the resort doing excursions or exploring, you may not get as much value out of everything you are paying for at an all inclusive.

That said, even when we stay at an all inclusive, we do not always stay on property the entire time. On a past trip in Puerto Vallarta, we left the resort for a meal and ended up having amazing authentic food at a local restaurant and even some street food. It was such a fun experience and a great way to connect a little more with the destination.

This was one of our favorite meals — stepping off the resort for something more local can be such a fun part of the experience.

So while beach all inclusive resorts are one of our favorite ways to travel, especially with kids, there are definitely times when a different style of trip might make more sense.

Popular Destinations for Beach All Inclusive Resorts

If you are just starting to research, these are some of the most popular destinations for beach all inclusive resorts:

  • Mexico (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen) – easy to get to, wide range of resorts, great for families
  • Jamaica – beautiful scenery, waterfalls, and a mix of relaxation and adventure
  • Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) – known for long beaches and family-friendly resorts
  • Turks and Caicos – fewer all inclusives, but known for incredible beaches

Final Thoughts on What Is Included in an All Inclusive Beach Resort

If you are still wondering what is included in an all inclusive beach resort, most of what you need for a relaxing vacation is already built in. Your room, meals, drinks, and a variety of activities are typically included, which is what makes this type of trip feel so simple.

For our family, that simplicity is exactly why we keep coming back to beach all inclusive resorts. We love not having to plan out every meal, make constant decisions, or keep track of every little expense. It just makes the whole trip feel more relaxed.

At the same time, it helps to go in knowing that not everything is included. Planning ahead for things like tips, excursions, or a few extras can help set expectations and avoid surprises.

It’s also worth checking current travel guidance for your destination before your trip. You can find the latest updates on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Travel page).

Overall, beach all inclusive vacations have been one of our favorite ways to travel, both before kids and now as a family. When you want a trip that feels easy from the moment you arrive, beach all inclusive resorts are hard to beat.
