Visiting Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens made us realize just how perfect the teen years can be for this kind of trip.

Our kids have always loved the beach, but this summer I started realizing that we’re entering a different stage of family vacations. During a day trip to the shore, our 13-year-old was bored at the beach for probably the first time ever. He’s past the age of happily playing in the sand, but he’s also not quite at the point where he wants to lie on a beach chair and read a book like his older sister. The ocean was cold and rough that day, there wasn’t a boardwalk, and there just wasn’t much for him to do.

It made me realize that our next beach vacation needed more action mixed in. Hotel Xcaret Mexico certainly gave us that.

Our kids were 13 and 15 during our stay, and my husband and I commented several times that they seemed to be at such great ages for Xcaret. They were old enough and big enough to do almost everything we wanted to try, from zip lining and riding ATVs to rappelling into cenotes and swimming through caves. At the same time, we still had the pools, rivers, waterslides and beach when we wanted a slower part of the day.

We tend to plan active family vacations anyway, but Xcaret gave us a combination that worked especially well at this stage. We could still have the tropical vacation our family loves, but nobody had to spend an entire week lying on the beach. After five nights with a 13- and 15-year-old, I think the teen years may be one of the best times to experience everything Hotel Xcaret Mexico has to offer.

Quick Answer: Is Hotel Xcaret Mexico Good for Teens?

Yes. I think Hotel Xcaret Mexico is especially good for teens who like being active and are willing to try new things. Our kids were 13 and 15, and they could participate in almost everything we wanted to do as a family.

They zip lined, rode ATVs, rappelled into a cenote, swam through caves and underground rivers, kayaked, went down waterslides and spent plenty of time in the pools and ocean. There was always something we could do together, but we could also slow down and enjoy the resort when we wanted to.

I wouldn’t say that every teenager will automatically love Xcaret just because of their age. If your teen hates water, heights, walking or active outdoor experiences, you may not get nearly as much value from everything that is included. For teens who look at a zip line, cenote or underground river and immediately want to try it, though, this resort has a lot to offer.

Why 13 and 15 Felt Like Such Great Ages for Xcaret

One thing my husband and I kept saying throughout the trip was, “The kids are such good ages for this.”

At 13 and 15, they were old enough and big enough to do almost everything that interested us. We didn’t have to split up because one child was too young for an activity, and we weren’t planning our days around naps, early bedtimes or younger-kid schedules. If we wanted to spend the afternoon at Xplor and stay into the evening for Xplor Fuego, we could.

They also had the energy for this kind of trip…in fact more energy for it than we did! Hotel Xcaret Mexico is huge, and we walked a lot even on days when we stayed at the resort. Once we added swimming, climbing, zip lining, kayaking and everything else we were doing, our days could be pretty active. Our teens handled it without a problem.

What I loved most, though, was that so much of it was fun for all four of us. We weren’t standing on the sidelines watching the kids do the activities. My husband and I were right there zip lining, swimming through caves, riding ATVs and jumping into cenotes with them.

There’s something really fun about reaching the stage where your kids can do these bigger adventures with you. They’re becoming more independent, but they still want to experience things together as a family. For us, 13 and 15 ended up being a really great window for Xcaret.

Of course, age alone doesn’t determine whether a teen will love this resort. Personality matters just as much. I go into that more in my guide to who Hotel Xcaret Mexico is best for, because an adventurous 10-year-old could easily get more out of Xcaret than an older teen who has no interest in water, heights or outdoor activities.

What Our Teens Loved Most at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

Xplor and Xplor Fuego

If I were choosing one Xcaret park that seems almost made for teenagers, it would be Xplor.

This was where we zip lined over the jungle, drove ATVs through caves and water, went down the huge Toboganxote waterslide and swam through underground rivers. These weren’t activities where my husband and I sat somewhere waiting for the kids. We did them right alongside them, which was a big part of what made Xplor so much fun for our family.

Apparently, our family vacation needed a little more flying through the jungle!

We actually split Xplor into two visits. We went in the afternoon one day and came back the following evening for Xplor Fuego. Instead of trying to cram every attraction into one long day, we did about half of what we wanted during our first visit and saved the rest for nighttime.

That worked really well with teens. We could spend the morning swimming and relaxing at Hotel Xcaret Mexico, head to Xplor when we were ready for some action, and still have enough energy to enjoy it. Going back for Xplor Fuego also made the second visit feel different. There was something pretty cool about flying through the jungle on a zip line or racing on ATVs after dark.

Not exactly your typical all-inclusive resort activity!

Our kids were also old enough that there wasn’t much we had to think about before choosing an activity. We could look at what was next and basically say, “Let’s do it.”

If you’re visiting Hotel Xcaret Mexico with adventurous teens, I would put Xplor very high on your list. Just don’t assume you have to give up an entire resort day to experience it. Splitting our time between Xplor, Xplor Fuego and the resort worked really well for us.

Xenotes

Xenotes was one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip, and this was another day when having teens at Xcaret really paid off.

We spent the day traveling to different cenotes where we swam, zip lined, kayaked, rappelled and jumped into the water. Our kids were willing to try everything right along with us. These are exactly the kinds of experiences I pictured when we decided that our next tropical vacation needed to have a little more adventure.

No complaints about being bored on this particular day!

Xenotes was also different from going to one of the parks because we were with the same small group throughout the day. We left our phones behind and just went from one adventure to the next. There really wasn’t much downtime, but none of us needed it.

Xenotes was a full-day excursion, which meant spending almost an entire day away from Hotel Xcaret Mexico. With only five nights at the resort, that was a pretty big commitment. I would still do it again without hesitation.

Just a mom and her teenager kayaking through the Mexican jungle!

Some of my favorite memories from the trip came from this day, and so did some of my favorite pictures. We had a professional photographer with our group, which meant we actually have photos of all four of us doing things I never could have photographed myself. The Xcaret photo package was especially worth it for us at Xenotes because we came home with more than 200 photos from this day alone.

If your teens hear “rappel into a cenote” or “zip line into the water” and immediately want to try it, I would absolutely consider adding Xenotes to your Xcaret plans.

The Pools, Rivers and Waterslides Gave Them Plenty to Do at the Resort

One of my favorite things about Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens was that we didn’t have to leave the resort to find something active to do.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens wasn’t all zip lines and cenotes. We loved the pools too!

There were plenty of pools, but our kids could also swim through the rivers, go down waterslides, kayak or head to the beach. Right outside our building, we had a river, pool, bar, kayaks and a waterslide. Our teens could be doing something while my husband and I relaxed nearby with a drink, which was pretty much a win for everyone.

A river with a slide built into the rocks? Yes, please!

This goes back to what I had realized during our beach day earlier that summer. My son still loves being at the beach, but at 13, he isn’t necessarily going to be happy sitting there for hours if the ocean isn’t cooperating. At Xcaret, that was never really an issue. If we had enough beach time, we could go swim in a river. If we were done with the pool, there was a waterslide. If someone wanted to kayak, we could do that too.

My daughter was perfectly happy to slow down and relax at times, while my son usually wanted a little more action. Hotel Xcaret Mexico gave us enough choices that both of those vacation styles could work at the same resort.

Even our resort days had plenty of opportunities for a little adventure.

We especially loved the area around our room in Casa Viento. Our location in Viento Building 2 ended up being perfect for our family because so many of these activities were literally right outside our building.

The funny part is that we never even got to everything. We kept saying we wanted to kayak through more of the rivers, and somehow five nights went by without us doing it. There was simply too much competing for our time.

Our Teens Enjoyed the Downtime Too

Not every minute of our trip involved zip lines, cenotes, and waterslides. As much as our teens loved the adventures, they were also perfectly happy slowing down and enjoying the resort. The nice thing about Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens is that slowing down doesn’t necessarily mean running out of things to do.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico has a dedicated teen club for ages 13–17, complete with obstacle courses and challenges, along with an arcade and even a teen dance club. I loved that there were places designed for older kids because, let’s face it, teenagers aren’t exactly lining up for the traditional kids’ club anymore. Our kids could check out the different spaces and see what interested them without us having to plan every minute of their day.

Those colorful trucks weren’t just for decoration. This teen club was all about obstacles and challenges!

The arcade was another fun area, with games and places to hang out. Sometimes teenagers just want to do their own thing for a little while, and I appreciated that there were options beyond another afternoon at the pool.

Arcade games, foosball, and a pool table? Not a bad setup for teenagers.

Right across from the arcade was a bar decorated with toys and memorabilia from the 1950s through the 1990s. I loved this place! Everywhere I looked, there was something I remembered from growing up. I probably spent more time looking at the decorations than anything else. I’m not sure our teenagers appreciated the nostalgia quite as much as I did, but I was thoroughly entertained.

A little nostalgia for the parents while the teenagers enjoyed the arcade across the way.

The food was another part of the fun. There were colorful little snack and dessert spots around the resort that looked like something out of a storybook. Our kids might be teenagers, but apparently nobody is too old to appreciate a place dedicated to snacks and sweets. I also loved that Xcaret put so much effort into decorating even these smaller areas. You never quite knew what you were going to find around the next corner.

Even the snack areas at Hotel Xcaret Mexico had personality!

Nonalcoholic piña coladas were also a big hit. There is something pretty great about being 13 or 15, walking up to a resort bar, and ordering yourself a frozen drink. Our kids certainly weren’t complaining! I think they enjoyed feeling a little grown up, and I enjoyed not having to be the one fetching everyone’s drinks.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens meant they could enjoy some of the little vacation luxuries too.

One of my favorite things about traveling with teenagers is that they’re starting to have a little more independence. Hotel Xcaret Mexico is enormous, but our kids were old enough to explore a bit, check out something that caught their attention, or grab a snack without us needing to follow them everywhere.

At the same time, they still wanted to spend time with us. We swam, ate, relaxed by the pools, and wandered around the resort together. Some of our favorite moments were the unplanned ones, when we weren’t rushing to get somewhere and could just enjoy being there.

That’s what I loved about Hotel Xcaret Mexico at this stage of family travel. Our kids were old enough to enjoy some freedom, but we were still making memories together. We could spend one day flying over the jungle on zip lines and the next wandering around the resort, stopping for snacks and frozen drinks. Both kinds of days felt like vacation.

Xcaret Gave Us Adventures We Could All Do Together

One of my favorite things about visiting Xcaret with teens was that so many of the experiences were things all four of us genuinely wanted to do.

We weren’t taking the kids to an activity and standing on the sidelines watching them. My husband and I were putting on the helmets and harnesses too. We rode the ATVs, flew across the zip lines, swam through the caves and jumped into cenotes right along with them.

Family of four wearing life jackets and swimming together in a cenote during the Xenotes excursion
Hotel Xcaret Mexico with teens gave us some of our favorite family adventures.

I think that becomes especially fun as your kids get older. Family vacations change as they become more independent and develop their own interests. At Xcaret, we had plenty of opportunities to split up or do our own thing, but some of our best memories came from doing something adventurous together.

There was also a lot of laughing involved. We weren’t trying to create some picture-perfect family bonding experience. We were getting soaked, screaming on waterslides, figuring out how to drive ATVs through caves and occasionally wondering what we had just agreed to do.

That is probably what I will remember most about taking our teens to Hotel Xcaret Mexico. It wasn’t simply that there was enough for them to do. There was so much that we all wanted to do together.

Would Less-Adventurous Teens Still Like Hotel Xcaret Mexico?

I don’t think a teenager has to be constantly looking for the next adrenaline rush to enjoy Hotel Xcaret Mexico. My two teens certainly aren’t exactly alike when it comes to how they like to spend their time.

There is plenty to enjoy without rappelling into a cenote or flying through the jungle on a zip line. Teens can swim, hang out at the pools, explore the resort, visit the teen club and arcade, kayak, eat very well and drink as many nonalcoholic piña coladas as they can handle. The beach also ended up being much nicer than I expected, and we swam in the ocean almost every day.

The bigger question for me would be whether your teen is interested in at least some of the activities that make Xcaret different from a traditional all-inclusive resort.

A teen who skips the occasional zip line because heights aren’t their thing could still have an amazing trip. A teen who dislikes swimming, caves, outdoor activities, walking and pretty much everything adventurous might be a different story. You would still be staying at a beautiful resort, but you might not get as much value from everything included in the price.

That’s why I think personality matters just as much as age when deciding whether Xcaret is right for your family. Who Hotel Xcaret Mexico is really best for goes into this in more detail, but I wouldn’t choose Xcaret simply because someone told me it’s great for teenagers.

I’d choose it because the things your particular teenager loves line up with what Xcaret does especially well.

Things Parents of Teens Should Know Before Booking

Be Prepared for a Lot of Walking

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is huge, and that’s before you add the parks and excursions. We walked a lot during this trip, climbed plenty of stairs and then added activities like swimming, zip lining and kayaking on top of it.

We are a pretty active family, and there were several times when my husband and I commented that we were glad all four of us were physically able to handle everything we wanted to do. You certainly don’t need to be an athlete to stay here, but this probably isn’t the type of vacation where you’ll spend the entire week walking between your room, a buffet and a beach chair.

Don’t Schedule Every Minute

This is probably one of my biggest pieces of advice for families with teens. It is very easy to look at everything included with your stay and immediately start filling every day with parks and excursions.

Try not to.

Our teens enjoyed the resort itself much more than we expected, and some of our best time was spent swimming, exploring and hanging around without anywhere we needed to be. We deliberately split Xplor between two visits instead of spending one entire day there, and I’m really glad we did.

When so much is included, it can feel like you need to do everything to get your money’s worth. For us, enjoying Hotel Xcaret Mexico itself was part of getting our money’s worth.

Five Nights Went Very Fast

We stayed for five nights, and by the end of the trip, all four of us wished we had more time.

Five nights was enough to have an amazing trip, but it wasn’t enough to do everything. Between Xenotes, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, part of Xcaret Park and everything we wanted to enjoy at the resort, we had to make choices.

If I were planning the same trip again with our teens, I would aim for seven nights if the price worked for our budget. I go much deeper into how many days I think you really need at Hotel Xcaret Mexico after seeing just how quickly our five-night stay went.

Pack for the Activities, Not Just the Resort

This is one trip where I wouldn’t pack as though you’re going to a typical all-inclusive.

🌴 A Few Things We Were Glad We Packed

With so much of our Xcaret trip involving water, these were some of the things we used over and over again:

  • My Water Shoes – I was really glad I spent a little more on a comfortable pair because we wore water shoes for so many of the activities.
  • Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen – This is the mineral sunscreen we brought for our trip.
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch – Perfect for keeping my phone protected around the resort pools, rivers and other water activities.
  • Waterproof Backpack – We used this for park days to carry dry clothes and everything else we wanted with us.
  • Wet Bags – These were surprisingly useful for separating wet swimsuits from everything else in our bag.
  • Portable Charger – This is my favorite portable charger, and we used our phones enough at Xcaret that I was glad to have it.

You can see everything else we brought in my complete Xcaret packing list.

Is Hotel Xcaret Mexico Worth It With Teenagers?

For our family, Hotel Xcaret Mexico was absolutely worth it with teenagers.

At 13 and 15, our kids were able to take advantage of so much of what was included. All four of us could zip line, ride ATVs, swim through caves, explore cenotes and enjoy the activities at the resort. We weren’t paying for experiences that our kids were too young to participate in or that only part of our family would enjoy.

That’s a big reason I think the teen years can be such a great time to visit.

There was also a lot included beyond the parks and bigger adventures. Our teens enjoyed the pools, rivers, waterslides, beach, teen club, arcade and food. We could have a completely different kind of day depending on what we felt like doing.

For us, the value came from that combination. We got the tropical all-inclusive vacation our family loves along with experiences we normally would have paid for separately on other trips.

We already love all-inclusive resorts for family beach trips, but Xcaret gave us a completely different version of that kind of vacation.

Of course, whether Xcaret is worth it for your family will depend on how much you’ll actually use what’s included. If your teens are excited about the parks, water activities and adventures, I think this is an age when you can get a lot out of a stay here.

After experiencing it with our own 13- and 15-year-olds, I would absolutely take them back.
