After flights, lodging is usually the biggest expense for families traveling to Cooperstown for a baseball tournament. While hotels are available in the area, availability becomes limited quickly during tournament season. In our case, All Star Village shared a list of sponsored hotel options with coaches to pass along to families, but many of those hotels felt higher priced than expected for what was offered. As a result, a lot of families chose not to book through those options and instead began looking elsewhere for lodging that better fit their needs and budgets.

For families like mine, who primarily earn and love World of Hyatt points, Cooperstown is a challenging destination. Hyatt does not have a presence near Cooperstown or Oneonta, so you won’t be able to use Hyatt points for this trip.

Booking Hotels for Cooperstown on Points and Miles Through Travel Portals

In addition to booking directly through hotel loyalty programs, families with flexible points can also use travel portals to book hotels near Oneonta and Cooperstown on points and miles. Travel portals allow you to use points to book independent hotels or chain hotels when traditional award nights are unavailable.

One thing that stood out during our search was how many vacation rentals are set in beautiful, quiet locations just outside Cooperstown and Oneonta. We found cabins in the woods, homes near lakes, and properties with outdoor space that felt like a retreat after long days at the fields.

For many families, these types of rentals can turn a tournament week into more than just baseball. Having access to nature, outdoor activities, and quiet downtime can make the experience more enjoyable for parents and siblings, especially during a long stay.

With all of these options in mind, the next step for us was deciding which approach made the most sense for our family and how we wanted to use our points overall.

Why We Aren’t Using Points for Our Cooperstown Trip

Even though I spent weeks researching ways to use points and miles for Cooperstown, we ultimately decided to pay for this trip out of pocket, and that choice was very intentional.

For this trip, airfare wasn’t part of the equation. We drove, which removed one of the main opportunities to use airline points.

We also chose an Airbnb instead of a hotel. During a week-long tournament, having more space made a bigger difference for us than maximizing points. Extra room meant flexibility, downtime between games, and a more comfortable setup than a standard hotel room would have allowed. While we looked at hotel options, the combination of availability, room size, and overall comfort made a vacation rental the better fit for this trip.

Could we have used Capital One miles to erase part of the Airbnb cost? Yes, and that was part of our original plan. But we made a strategic decision to save those points for Disney park tickets instead, where the impact on our overall travel budget was significantly higher.
