Is a Cooperstown Baseball Tournament Worth It? Our Honest Take

If you’re wondering whether a Cooperstown baseball tournament is worth it, I can tell you that our answer changed quite a bit between the first time we heard about Cooperstown and the week we actually watched our son play there.

When our son was younger, spending thousands of dollars and using a week of our summer vacation for a baseball tournament honestly wasn’t something my husband and I were excited about. We love to travel as a family, and we usually want to spend our vacation time and money choosing where we want to go and what we want to experience.

But Cooperstown eventually became part of our son’s 12U season, and seeing how excited he was made us look at the whole thing differently. After spending the week there ourselves, watching him experience it with his teammates, and seeing just how much it meant to him, we came home with a very different perspective than we had a few years earlier.

Was it expensive? Absolutely. Would we want every family vacation to revolve around baseball? Definitely not. But was a Cooperstown baseball tournament worth it for our family and something we’re glad we gave our son the chance to experience? Yes.

Why We Weren’t Sold on Cooperstown Baseball Tournament Being Worth It at First

We first started hearing about Cooperstown tournaments when our son was around 10U. Families talked about how much fun the week was, but we also heard that most families were spending at least $5,000 to go. At the time, my husband and I remember thinking that it wasn’t something we really wanted to do.

Our son had already been playing with the same travel team for several years, and Cooperstown wasn’t on the radar when he joined. Our team was actually the first in our organization to eventually make the trip, so this wasn’t something we had signed up for or had been planning toward since he was little.

For us, the biggest hesitation was the amount of money and vacation time we would be committing to one week of baseball. We love traveling with our kids, and we set aside both money and vacation days each year for family travel and occasional couples trips. The idea of using a significant portion of both on a baseball tournament wasn’t something we were interested in.

That’s one of the realities I think families need to consider when deciding whether Cooperstown is worth it. The tournament fee is only the beginning. Once you add lodging for the rest of the family, food, transportation, souvenirs, and all of the other expenses that come with spending nearly a week in Cooperstown, it becomes a significant financial commitment. I broke down what families can realistically expect to spend if you want a better idea of the costs to plan for.

The total can also look very different from one family to another. Where you stay, how many family members attend, how far you have to travel, how often you eat out, and how much you spend on all of the Cooperstown extras can make a big difference.

For some families, Cooperstown essentially becomes the family vacation that year. I also don’t think a family should feel guilty if the answer is no. Cooperstown may be a once-in-a-lifetime baseball experience, but that doesn’t mean spending thousands of dollars on it is the right decision for every family.

At 10U, we weren’t convinced that it was right for ours.

What Changed Our Minds About Cooperstown

As our son got closer to 12U, Cooperstown started becoming a real possibility. We had a great group of boys who had been playing together for years, and there was more and more talk about how much fun it would be to take this particular team. What had once seemed like something other baseball families did was suddenly something our own team might do.

Families end up at Cooperstown in different ways. Some teams are formed specifically to go, so everyone knows from the beginning what they’re signing up for. Other established travel teams, like ours, decide to make the trip when the players reach 12U. By that point, our son had been with his team for years, so Cooperstown simply became part of his season.

My husband and I gradually started warming up to the idea. Then the trip became official, and our son was thrilled.

That changed things.

Some boys from our town, including one of his close friends, had gone the year before and had an amazing time. He had heard all about it and couldn’t wait to have the same experience with his own teammates. He had also been going away to summer camp for several years by then, so the idea of staying with his team for the week wasn’t intimidating to him at all. If anything, that made Cooperstown even more exciting.

We also knew this wasn’t an experience we could simply put off until another year. Cooperstown tournaments are built around 12U baseball, and once that season passes, so does the opportunity. As parents, it became less about whether this was how we wanted to spend part of our summer and more about whether we wanted to give our son this one chance to experience it.

Once we understood how different Cooperstown is from a regular tournament, we also started to see why players get so excited about going. It isn’t just a week with more baseball games. The boys live with their teammates, participate in special events, and get an experience that feels completely different from the tournaments they play all season.

By the time we were actually getting ready to go, our attitude had changed quite a bit. We were excited to see our son finally get the Cooperstown experience he had been looking forward to.

Why Cooperstown Was So Special for Our Son

Our son plays other sports and has plenty of interests outside of baseball, but baseball has always been his constant. It’s the sport he plays throughout the year, takes lessons for, works hard at, and sets goals for himself in. By the time he reached 12U, there had already been years of practices, games, tournaments, lessons, and time spent working on his game.

That was a big part of why Cooperstown started to feel worth it to us. This wasn’t just another baseball tournament. It felt like a way to celebrate something he had worked hard at and loved for years.

There’s also something special about the timing. Twelve feels like the end of one stage of youth baseball. After Cooperstown, the boys move on to bigger fields and the older levels of the game. We knew baseball would continue for our son, but this felt like a pretty great way to mark the end of those younger years.

Once we got there, we started to understand what makes Cooperstown so much fun for the players. For almost a week, they get to completely immerse themselves in baseball. They live with their teammates, play multiple games, participate in Opening Ceremonies and skills competitions, meet players from teams around the country, and have a level of independence they don’t normally get during a travel baseball weekend.

The whole tournament also feels like a big event. Watching more than 1,000 12U players march into Opening Ceremonies was one of those moments when I really understood why Cooperstown had become such a big deal. These boys had been looking forward to this for months, and now they were finally there.

Our son made the most of the entire experience. He loved living with his team and wanted to spend his free time with them too. If you’re wondering what that separation from parents actually looks like, I shared how independent the players really are and how much we saw our son throughout the week.

I think this is the part that’s hard to understand before you go. From the outside, it can look like an awfully expensive week of baseball. Once we were there and saw how much our son was getting out of the entire experience, we finally understood why Cooperstown means so much to so many 12U baseball players.

That was a huge part of what made the Cooperstown baseball tournament worth it for us.

Was Cooperstown Worth It for the Rest of Our Family?

The rest of us ended up having a really good week too.

A big part of that was spending the week with the other families from our team. We watched games together, hung out between games, went out to eat, and just had fun experiencing the whole thing as a group. After years of spending weekends together at baseball tournaments, it was pretty fun to have this bigger experience together too.

Our teen daughter enjoyed herself and came to a lot of the games and activities because she plays softball and loves baseball, but she didn’t come to everything. Staying in an Airbnb worked especially well for us because she had somewhere comfortable to relax when she wanted a break from the baseball fields.

Every sibling is different, though. Some of the younger siblings on our team had a blast hanging out at the fields all day and seemed to love the whole Cooperstown experience. Our daughter was happy to join us for plenty of it while also having the option to sit some things out.

There was plenty for the families to enjoy. We watched the skills competitions and fireworks, participated in the Mom’s Home Run Derby with my friends. We visited the Baseball Hall of Fame and explored Cooperstown when our schedule allowed, but some of our favorite memories happened right at the complex.

We were also fortunate that Cooperstown didn’t replace our regular family vacation that summer. We took an amazing family trip about a month later, so we were able to enjoy Cooperstown for exactly what it was….a special experience centered around something our son loves.

By the end of the week, all four of us were glad we had gone.

It wasn’t just about the baseball games. Cooperstown gave our son the chance to celebrate something he has loved and worked hard at for years, while making some pretty incredible memories with his teammates along the way. Seeing how much he loved the entire experience made it worth it for us.
