Before our trip, I spent plenty of time researching recommendations, talking with experienced baseball families, and comparing notes with other moms on our team. After spending the week at Cooperstown All Star Village ourselves, many of those recommendations proved to be exactly right, and a few things surprised us.

Parents spend Cooperstown a little differently than players. While the boys are busy with games and team activities, parents spend long days watching baseball, walking between fields, and trying to stay comfortable in the summer heat.

These are the items I think are worth buying for Cooperstown All Star Village, whether you’re spending the day in the bleachers or walking between fields.

Bleacher Seats

We already owned two bleacher seats because they’ve been a staple at our baseball and softball games for years. The only reason I bought a third one was for Cooperstown so my husband, daughter, and I could each have our own.

After the first day of games, I was even happier we brought them. The team bleachers are where we spent almost all of our game time, and having back support made those long stretches between innings much more comfortable.

I’ve tried a few different styles over the years, and this is the one I keep coming back to. I like that it has armrests, breathable mesh fabric on the seat and back, and hooks that secure it to the bleachers so it doesn’t slide around while you’re sitting. It also sits you up off the aluminum, making it much more comfortable during long tournament days, and the shoulder strap makes it easy to carry from field to field.

Portable Charger

A portable charger is another item I’d recommend bringing for both parents and players.

Between taking photos, checking GameChanger, texting other parents, and looking up schedules, I seem to drain my phone battery during every tournament weekend. At Cooperstown, I’ll also be sending one with my son so he can keep his phone charged for Apple Pay, staying in touch with us, and taking pictures throughout the week.

They’re small, lightweight, and one of those items you don’t think much about until your phone is at 5% battery with half the day still ahead.

Cooler Backpack

Instead of packing a traditional cooler, I bought on a cooler backpack for Cooperstown.

After spending time at the complex, I’m glad we brought a cooler backpack. Large coolers aren’t permitted inside, so it was an easy way to carry cold water, a few gluten-free snacks for me, and anything we wanted to keep cool without hauling extra gear.

Since I’m gluten free, I also like having a place to keep a few safe snacks with me instead of relying on whatever food happens to be available. It gives me a little more flexibility throughout the day, especially during long stretches between games.

Kica Mini Handheld Fan

I actually bought a Kica Mini Handheld Fan long before Cooperstown was even on my radar.

Last summer, I kept noticing the boys on our baseball team asking to borrow one from another player while they were in the dugout during those hot July tournaments. After seeing how often it was being passed around, I decided to buy one too.

We’ve used it well beyond the baseball field, including on our August trip to Italy and during hot days at Disney. Since it’s small enough to fit in a backpack, it’s easy to keep with us whenever we’re traveling or spending the day outdoors.

It also got plenty of use at Cooperstown. Between the heat, long walks around the complex, and time sitting in the bleachers, I reached for it throughout the day.

Living on site for a week is what makes Cooperstown different from a typical baseball tournament. Players aren’t just packing for games. They’re managing their own gear, showering in shared facilities, and getting their uniforms ready for the next day.

These are the player essentials I’d recommend buying before heading to Cooperstown All Star Village, starting with the ones I think make the biggest difference.

Laundry Belt with Sock Loops

If you’re buying items specifically for Cooperstown, start with a laundry belt with sock loops.

At Cooperstown All Star Village, uniforms are washed each night, and players are required to use a laundry belt to keep their uniform pieces together during the laundry process. I’d definitely recommend buying one with built-in sock loops so socks stay attached instead of getting separated or lost.

It’s one of those Cooperstown-specific purchases most families have never needed before, which is exactly why it catches so many parents by surprise.

Mesh Shower Caddy

Another item I added to my shopping list was a mesh shower caddy.

Since players use communal locker room-style showers at Cooperstown All Star Village, they’ll be carrying their shampoo, soap, toothbrush, and other toiletries back and forth each day. A mesh shower caddy keeps everything together, drains quickly, and dries much faster than a solid plastic one.

I like this style because it’s lightweight, easy for kids to carry, and doesn’t stay wet after a shower.

After seeing the bath house in person, I wouldn’t skip this item. Carrying everything back and forth each day is much easier with a lightweight mesh caddy that dries quickly.

Shower Slides

A pair of slides for the shower is another Cooperstown essential.

Since players use communal showers throughout the week, shower shoes help keep feet off the locker room floor. I also like that they dry quickly and can be worn around the bunkhouses when players aren’t in cleats.

After seeing the communal showers ourselves, shower slides quickly moved from a “nice to have” to an absolute must-have in my opinion.

Toiletry Kit

If you don’t already have travel-sized toiletries at home, a toiletry kit is an easy way to check everything off your list at once.

If you’re starting from scratch, buying one kit is much easier than trying to remember every little toiletry item on its own.

Packing Cubes

I’ve been using packing cubes for years whenever my kids go away to camp, and I’ll be using them for Cooperstown too.

They’re also one of the items I include in my Cooperstown packing list because they’ve made packing so much easier over the years.

Instead of digging through one large duffel bag, each cube holds a different category of clothing like shorts, T-shirts, socks, or pajamas. I also label each cube with my child’s name and what’s inside. It also saves them from dumping their entire duffel bag on the cabin floor every time they need a clean pair of socks.

At the end of the week, the empty cubes are also perfect for separating dirty laundry from clean clothes.

After we left that first night, the coaches sent a picture of all the boys hanging out in their cabin. Looking at it, I was really glad we’d used packing cubes because I knew my son could easily find what he needed and stay organized.

Fabric Name Labels

As a teacher, I’ve seen enough overflowing lost-and-found bins to know that kids are experts at misplacing clothes. Add in shared dorms, nightly laundry, and a week with dozens of teammates, and labeling sweatshirts, towels, and other clothing just makes sense.

I like these simple fabric name labels because they stick directly to clothing without ironing and hold up through the washer and dryer. They’re especially helpful for sweatshirts, shorts, and other items that might accidentally get mixed up with teammates’ gear.

Fitted Twin Sheet

A fitted twin sheet is another item you’ll want to have before heading to Cooperstown.

I was glad we packed a fitted twin sheet underneath the sleeping bag. It made the bed feel cleaner and more comfortable throughout the week.

Sleeping Bag

Your player will also need a sleeping bag for the week.

Since players sleep in the bunkhouses, a lightweight sleeping bag is an easy bedding option that’s simple to pack, roll up, and bring home at the end of the tournament.

White Baseball Pants

Players wear white baseball pants at Cooperstown All Star Village, so make sure your player has a pair that fits well before tournament week. If you need a new pair, these white baseball pants are a great option.

Baseball Belt

Cooperstown All Star Village recommends that players wear matching team belts. Many teams choose navy since the tournament-issued socks are navy, but check with your coach before ordering.

If your team is wearing navy, this navy baseball belt is a great choice.

Sports Water Bottle

A good sports water bottle is something every player should have for Cooperstown.

Summer baseball is hot, so I always like sending my kids with an insulated water bottle that keeps their water cold as long as possible.

Cooling Gear for Hot Tournament Days

If you’ve ever spent a weekend at a July baseball tournament, you already know how hot it can get.

The boys on our team regularly use cooling towels, cooling headbands, and a misting fan to cool off between games. We usually bring them to every summer tournament, and they occasionally get passed around to parents trying to beat the heat too.

These small items don’t take up much room, but they can make those long, hot tournament days much more comfortable.

Portable Charger

I’m really glad we sent our son with a portable charger. Between photos, Apple Pay, and checking in with us throughout the week, he actually used it.

Players use their phones for Apple Pay, taking pictures, and staying in touch with their families, so a dead battery is the last thing you want.

Apple AirPods

A pair of Apple AirPods isn’t a necessity, but they’re a nice item to have for the week.

Players have downtime between games and in the bunkhouses, so earbuds are great for listening to music, watching videos, or making a quick phone call home without disturbing everyone around them. Just make sure the case is labeled with your player’s name since they’re easy to misplace.

Crocs

A pair of Crocs can come in handy throughout the week.

They’re great for wearing around the bunkhouses, heading to the showers, or giving your player’s feet a break after spending all day in baseball cleats. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and easy to slip on and off.

They ended up getting worn much more than I expected because they were easy to slip on whenever he wasn’t wearing cleats.

Downtime Favorites at Cooperstown All Star Village

Baseball is the reason everyone is there, but there will also be downtime between games. These are a few easy items to throw in your player’s bag.

Final Thoughts on What to Buy for Cooperstown All Star Village

There are plenty of other things you could buy before Cooperstown, but I don’t think you need to fill your cart with everything you see online.

Looking back after our week, I honestly wouldn’t buy much more than this. These were the items we used the most, and they’re the purchases I’d make again without hesitation.

Most of these are things we’ll continue using for baseball tournaments, family trips, and vacations long after Cooperstown is over, so they’re purchases I don’t mind making.
