We’ve been doing all-inclusive beach vacations for decades, both before kids and now as a family, and one thing that always comes up is what’s actually included and what isn’t.

Before each trip, I look into the details for that specific resort because it’s not the same everywhere. Some include more activities, while others keep things pretty basic.

Most of your trip is covered, which is why we keep coming back to all-inclusive resorts, but there are still a few things that cost extra.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that all-inclusive means absolutely everything is covered. It doesn’t.

What it really means is that most of your trip is taken care of ahead of time. Food, drinks, and plenty of activities are included, which is what makes these trips feel so easy.

This is where a lot of people get tripped up if they haven’t looked into it ahead of time.

This is usually the biggest extra cost at an all-inclusive resort.

Anything that takes you off the resort, like guided tours, waterfalls, boat trips, or adventure activities, is almost always an additional cost.

For us, this is usually where we choose to spend extra. We like having the balance of relaxing at the resort, but still getting out to see more of the destination.

On past trips, some of our favorite memories have come from these days off the resort. It breaks things up and gives you a different experience beyond the beach and pool.

This is one area where I usually look into what’s included ahead of time because this is one area where resorts can be very different.

Things like massages or facials are usually considered an add-on, even at really nice resorts. This is one of those areas where “all-inclusive” definitely doesn’t mean everything is included.

For us, this isn’t something we plan around. If we do it, it’s more of a last-minute decision than something we go into the trip expecting.

Before each trip, this is something I always check, but it’s pretty consistent across most resorts.

For us, we always bring cash for tips. It’s just easier, and it’s something we plan for ahead of time so we’re not thinking about it once we’re there.

If you do plan to tip, it’s usually for the people you interact with the most, like bartenders, servers, housekeeping, and anyone helping with activities or luggage.

Tips can add up over the course of a trip, especially for a full week, so it’s something we like to factor into our overall budget ahead of time.

This is also one of those things that can vary a lot depending on the resort. Some have a strict no-tipping policy, while others expect it, so it’s worth knowing what to expect before you go.

It’s not a huge expense day to day, but it’s definitely one of the most common all-inclusive resort extras to keep in mind.

This is one of those things that’s easy to assume is included, but that’s not always the case.
