We loved Munich, but what really made the trip special was how easy it was to get out of the city for the day.

The best day trips from Munich gave us a mix of castles, mountains, and even a quick hop into Austria, all without needing to change hotels.

We spent 9 days based in Munich, and adding a few day trips made the entire experience feel more complete. Some were simple train rides, while others worked better as guided tours depending on logistics.

Day Trips We Personally Did from Munich

These are the day trips we actually did during our time in Munich, and they ended up being some of the highlights of the entire trip.

We mixed guided tours and train days depending on what made the most sense, and while some were long days, they were completely worth it.

Neuschwanstein Castle Day Trip from Munich

Neuschwanstein Castle is probably the most well-known day trip from Munich, and it’s easy to see why once you’re there. The setting feels almost unreal, especially when you catch the views of the castle surrounded by mountains.

We chose to do this as a guided bus tour from Munich, which made the day much easier to manage. Transportation and a guide were included, and we had a set time to enter the castle, although the ticket itself was paid separately.

One thing I really liked about going this route was having some free time built in to explore the area. Walking around Hohenschwangau and taking in the views, especially from spots like Mary’s Bridge, ended up being just as memorable as the castle itself.

Eagle’s Nest (Berchtesgaden) Day Trip from Munich

This ended up being one of the biggest highlights of our trip. The views in this part of Bavaria are completely different from Munich, with mountains in every direction once you get closer to Berchtesgaden.

We also did this as a guided bus tour from Munich, which made the logistics much easier since getting up to Eagle’s Nest involves a series of buses and a historic elevator. Having everything organized ahead of time took a lot of the stress out of the day.

My husband and I both enjoy history, so this stop was especially interesting for us. The Obersalzberg area adds an important historical layer to the experience, while the setting itself is what really makes it unforgettable.

Salzburg was one of the easiest day trips to plan and one of the most charming places we visited. It’s a simple train ride from Munich, and once you arrive, everything is very walkable. If you’d rather not plan it yourself, there are also guided day trips available from Munich.

The setting is what really stands out, with the old town, the river, and mountains in the background. It feels different from Munich in a really nice way without being complicated to get to.

We did this on our own by train, which gave us the flexibility to move at our own pace and explore what interested us most. There’s plenty to see in a day, but it also works well as an overnight if you have the time.

Augsburg Day Trip from Munich

Augsburg was a quieter day trip that ended up being a really nice change of pace.

It’s an easy train ride from Munich and much less crowded than some of the more well-known options.

You can check train schedules and times directly through the German rail system (Deutsche Bahn), which makes planning this trip really straightforward. You can also book train tickets in advance.

We spent our time exploring the old town, visiting the Gold Hall inside the Town Hall, and walking through the Fuggerei, which is one of the oldest social housing complexes in the world. It’s a smaller city, but there’s enough to see without feeling rushed.

This is a good option if you’re looking for something more relaxed or want to balance out some of the longer, busier day trips.

Other Day Trips from Munich Worth Considering

🏔️ Garmisch-Partenkirchen & Zugspitze

This is one of the most popular options for getting into the Alps from Munich.

You can take a train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and then continue up to Zugspitze, which is the highest peak in Germany. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for mountain scenery, hiking, or just a completely different landscape from the city.

This is one we would have loved to do if we had more time, and plan to do the next time we take a trip back to Bavaria.

🕊️ Dachau Memorial Site

Located just outside Munich, Dachau is an important historical site and memorial. It’s not a light or casual visit, but many people choose to include it as part of their trip to better understand this part of history.

It’s also one of the easiest day trips logistically, with straightforward public transportation from Munich. Some visitors choose to go with a guided tour to better understand the history and context during their visit.
