Spending 2 days in New York City at Christmas is one of our favorite family traditions because the city somehow feels even more magical during the holiday season.

There’s nothing quite like New York City at Christmas! The twinkling lights, storefronts draped in garland, and an energy that feels magical every single year. For our family, visiting NYC at Christmastime has become a tradition. We live just a little over an hour away, so sometimes it’s a quick day trip and other years we make it a full weekend getaway. Either way, it never loses its magic. We spend our time soaking in the lights, skating in Central Park, seeing the Rockefeller Center tree, and creating memories. If you’re planning your own holiday trip, this guide to 2 days in New York City at Christmas shares exactly how we fit in the best lights, shows, and festive stops without feeling rushed!

NYC during Christmas is magical, but it’s also one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit. Hotels fill up quickly, especially for family-friendly locations near Midtown and the holiday attractions. You can compare current rates and availability on Hotels.com.

If you are planning another NYC trip outside the holidays, I also shared all of our favorite hotel, transportation, and budgeting strategies in our New York City on points guide.

Day 1 of Our 2 Days in New York City at Christmas: Classic Holiday Magic

Central Park and Ice Skating:

No matter what time of year we go, or how often, my kids always request to make a stop at Central Park. There is just something special about roaming the greenery surrounded by huge sky scrapers in all directions that makes it feel so unique and special. The park feels extra peaceful in December—the ponds may have a light layer of ice, the carriages are jingling by, and the city skyline peeks through the bare trees. We like to begin our first morning there with a walk through Central Park before the crowds arrive. It’s the perfect way to ease into the excitement of 2 days in New York City at Christmas.

Start your NYC Christmas weekend with this view — calm, beautiful, and full of anticipation.

Another fun connection for our family is spotting filming locations from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The Plaza Hotel sits right at the corner of Central Park, and our kids love imagining Kevin racing through the lobby or ordering his giant room service sundae. It’s a little movie magic moment that makes this part of the city even more fun to explore.

There are several places to go ice skating in New York during the holidays. Rockefeller Center is the most famous, with its rink right beneath the Christmas tree, but it’s also the most crowded and expensive. Bryant Park’s Winter Village offers free admission if you bring your own skates, but it can be hectic on weekends. We usually choose Wollman Rink in Central Park because it feels more spacious and relaxed, especially in the morning.

These are the simple moments that make 2 days in New York City at Christmas feel so special.

If you’re visiting close to Christmas, keep in mind that Wollman Rink uses timed-entry tickets, but even with a reserved slot, you might still wait a bit before getting onto the ice. The line tends to build quickly by mid-day, so we’ve found that arriving early, right after opening, makes for a smoother, more relaxed experience. You can check current hours and pricing on the official Wollman Rink website before you go. With the skyline behind you and the park all around, it’s a picture-perfect way to start your holiday weekend.

Wollman Rink is our favorite place to skate — spacious, scenic, and perfect for families.

After skating, we usually grab a hot chocolate and start heading south toward Fifth Avenue. This is where the magic of the holiday windows begins.

Fifth Avenue Window Displays and St. Patrick’s Cathedral:

After leaving Central Park, we like to take our time walking down Fifth Avenue. This stretch of the city feels completely transformed during the holidays. Every store window is glowing with light and color. The displays at Saks Fifth Avenue are amazing, especially when the light show begins in the evening and music fills the street.

Just across the street from Saks is St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and it’s worth stepping inside for a quiet break.

The soaring ceilings, candles, and calm atmosphere are such a peaceful contrast to the busy sidewalks outside. Whether you go in for a few minutes or stay to take photos from the steps, it’s a beautiful reminder of the history and spirit of the city. You can learn more about visiting hours on the official St. Patrick’s Cathedral website.

The cathedral’s peaceful glow offers a quiet break from the holiday crowds.

Along the way, we also like to stop by the holiday windows at Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany & Co. The designs change every year, but they’re always stunning. This part of Fifth Avenue is easy to linger on. There’s something festive to see on every corner, and if you go in the late afternoon, you’ll start to see the city lights come to life as you make your way toward Rockefeller Center.

If you’re following this itinerary for 2 days in New York City at Christmas, aim to reach Rockefeller Center around dusk so you can see the lights sparkle against the evening sky.

Rockefeller Center and FAO Schwarz:

From Fifth Avenue, it’s only a short walk to Rockefeller Center, home to the most famous Christmas tree in New York. Even if you’ve seen it a dozen times in photos, nothing compares to standing beneath those sparkling lights in person. The whole plaza glows with music, decorations, and that joyful December energy. The tree usually lights up in late November and stays up through early January. You can find this year’s lighting schedule on the Rockefeller Center website. My kids like spotting the ice-skaters gliding below the tree and watching the angels that line the path toward Fifth Avenue. It’s the heart of the holidays in the city and one of those must-see stops during 2 days in New York City at Christmas.

Our kids also love standing near the Rockefeller Center tree and pointing out that this is where Kevin finally finds his mom at the end of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. It’s such a sweet moment in the movie and seeing that exact spot in real life makes it feel extra fun.

Before leaving Rockefeller Center, we always make a stop at FAO Schwarz, the iconic toy store right nearby. The kids love testing the giant piano from Big and wandering through the toy displays. It brings out the little kids in all of us.

When I was little, my family used to visit New York City at Christmas, and I remember seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with my parents several times. Now, walking past the bright marquee brings back those memories. There’s something special about sharing that same experience with my own kids and watching them feel the excitement I did back then. It’s one of those full-circle moments that makes our 2 days in New York City at Christmas feel extra meaningful.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular:

For me, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is the moment it truly feels like the holidays. No matter how many times we’ve been to New York in December, this show is a highlight. The lights, music, and Rockettes’ precision are incredible, but it’s the combination of tradition, nostalgia, and family magic that makes it unforgettable.

It’s also my daughter’s favorite part of the trip. We usually make it an annual tradition. From the high-energy “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” to the live nativity scene, every detail is designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Christmas dream. By the time the finale begins, I always feel like I’m officially in the holiday spirit.

Waiting for the Rockettes never gets old — especially when you get to share the magic with your kids.

If you’re planning 2 days in New York City at Christmas, I can’t recommend this show enough. The theater itself is stunning, and every seat has a great view. Tickets do sell out fast, especially on weekends in December, so it’s worth booking in advance to lock in your preferred time. Radio City Christmas Spectacular tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Evening performances are our favorite because you walk out to see the lights of Rockefeller Center glowing just across the street, which feels like the perfect ending to a magical day in New York City.

There’s nothing quite like seeing the Radio City Music Hall lights glowing after the show — pure New York Christmas magic.

If your family enjoys big attractions and high-energy park days like this, you would probably also enjoy our Universal Orlando on points and miles guide.

How long is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular?

The show runs for about 90 minutes with no intermission. It moves quickly and keeps even younger kids engaged from start to finish.

When does the show run each year?

Performances usually begin in early November and continue through early January. We like to visit in December when the city is fully decorated and the Rockefeller Center tree is lit.

Is the show good for kids?

Absolutely! It’s one of the few big-city performances that truly entertains all ages. Our kids especially love the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and Santa scenes, while I always look forward to the live nativity and finale.

Where is the best place to sit?

Every seat has a great view, but the Orchestra or front Mezzanine sections give the best full-stage perspective. If you’re bringing kids, aim for a seat near the aisle so they can easily see the Rockettes’ famous kick line.

How can I get tickets?

Tickets sell out quickly, especially for weekend evenings in December. We always book ours early through an official partner.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is always the moment that truly captures the spirit of our 2 days in New York City at Christmas. It’s joyful, nostalgic, and filled with the kind of sparkle that stays with you long after the curtain closes.

Day 2 of Our 2 Days in New York City at Christmas: Relaxed Morning and Family Favorites

After a full first day of lights, music, and holiday magic, we usually take things slower the next morning. We usually sleep in, grab coffee and breakfast near our hotel, and enjoy one last walk through the city before heading home. It’s our chance to soak up the festive energy without rushing, especially since the city feels a little quieter early in the day.

Macy’s Herald Square:

Before leaving, we like to stop at Macy’s Herald Square to see the famous Christmas windows. Even if we caught a glimpse of them on Day 1, it’s worth returning in daylight to take in all the details. Inside, Macy’s is completely transformed for the holidays. There are lights, ornaments, and floor after floor of festive decorations. If you’re visiting with kids, Santa’s Workshop on the eighth floor is a fun stop. You can reserve your time slot on the Macy’s Santaland page before you go.

If you have a little extra time, Bryant Park’s Winter Village is just a short walk from Macy’s. We haven’t made it there yet, but it’s high on our list for next year. The market-style shops, cozy food stalls, and skating rink look like a fun way to end a holiday weekend in New York. You can check dates and details on the Bryant Park Winter Village website.

Times Square and the Last Stop Before Heading Home:

A quick stop in Times Square adds excitement to our 2 days in New York City at Christmas — the lights, the buzz, and the kid-favorite stores!

Before we head out of the city, our kids always ask to stop in Times Square. It’s not technically a Christmas attraction, but the bright lights and giant screens are always a hit.

Family Travel Tip:

The subways, ferries, buses, and crowds, especially in Times Square during NYC Christmas season can feel chaotic with kids. One thing that gives me instant peace of mind is having an AirTag in each of our backpacks and suitcases.

A quick stop at the Nintendo Store in Times Square is always a hit — especially for Mario fans!

We pop into a few favorite stores like Nintendo NY, M&M’s World, The Lego Store, and Line Friends to pick out small souvenirs. Sometimes we grab lunch nearby before starting the drive home, and talk about what we’ll do on our next Christmas trip to New York City.

Kids can test out new Nintendo Switch games right in the store — a fun, free activity to break up the sightseeing.

Optional Ideas if You Have More Time During Your 2 Days in New York City at Christmas:

If your schedule allows, there are plenty of other festive stops that fit easily into your second day. The Bryant Park Winter Village is perfect for shopping and skating, while the New York Public Library nearby makes a beautiful quick stop for photos with its famous lion statues out front. If you’re looking for something less crowded, the High Line offers a peaceful winter walk with great city views, and Chelsea Market is nearby for food and last-minute gifts.

If your family loves festive trips like this one, I also shared why we love Disney at Christmastime even though we avoid the actual Christmas week crowds.

Wrapping Up Our 2 Days in New York City at Christmas

Our weekend in New York City at Christmas always feels magical. From ice skating in Central Park to standing beneath the Rockefeller tree and watching the Rockettes perform in perfect unison, each moment reminds us why this trip has become a family tradition.

Because we live just over an hour away, sometimes it’s a day trip and sometimes a full weekend, but it marks the start of our holiday season. We’ve learned that you don’t have to see everything. It’s the simple moments that make the memories last: sipping hot chocolate, taking photos in front of the lights, and hearing the city buzz with holiday excitement.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, spending 2 days in New York City at Christmas is something every family should experience at least once. The mix of music, lights, and tradition truly captures the magic of the season, and for us, it’s a trip we look forward to all year long.

NYC at Christmas is magical — but it’s also cold, crowded, windy, and full of long walking days. These are the items we always bring to stay warm, comfortable, and prepared while exploring the city in December.

🧳 AirTags in Every Suitcase and Backpack

We put AirTags in our backpacks and luggage, especially during holiday travel and crowded subway rides. It’s peace of mind during the busiest time of year.

➡️ Here’s the exact AirTag 4-pack we use.

🔋 Portable Charger (A Must!)

Cold weather drains batteries fast — and NYC definitely does too. Between maps, photos, and subway apps, a portable charger is a must. I have had several over the years and this is hands down my favorite.

➡️ This is the portable charger we bring.

🧤 Touchscreen Gloves

You’ll be checking directions, taking photos, and filming everything and regular gloves make that impossible. Touchscreen gloves keep your hands warm while still letting you use your phone.

➡️ These are the touchscreen gloves we use

🔥 Hand Warmers

Perfect for long lines at Rockefeller Center, walking through Bryant Park Winter Village, or watching the Saks light show. Slip them into pockets or gloves for instant warmth.

🧦 Warm, Comfortable Walking Socks

You walk miles in NYC. Warm, cushioned socks make long days exploring Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and Fifth Avenue so much more comfortable.
